Defining Lifestyle Photography

When you choose an independent photographer, outside of a large company, it is important to remember that each individual has their own style. We are artists, and are proud of the unique work we offer our clients.

Before booking your photographer, it is important to do your research carefully and make sure their style matches your own.

Before booking your photographer, it is important to do your research carefully and make sure their style matches your own.

I’ll  give you an example that recently happened to me. I recently had my hair colored blonde. (I know, this is just another example of my midlife crisis.) I chose my colorist based on her website and Instagram. I noticed that her blonde transformations matched exactly what I was looking for. I chose my service based on a skill she showed expertise in. I did not visit her salon and ask her to color my hair pink and expect her to do this to perfection. She doesn’t have examples of pink hair on her site, so that request would be silly. I probably wouldn’t be happy with the result, not because of her talent but because of my unrealistic expectation. Luckily, I did do my research, and so far I’m loving life as a blonde.

Photographers have specialities and areas where they are experts too. There are plenty of photographs who use an array of props, but since you have visited my website, you may have noticed I don’t focus on props. I am a lifestyle photographer.

My style focuses on:
Authentic interactions
Natural light
Your home
True life (this includes stuffed animals, play, favorite blankets and sometimes even tears and pacifiers)
Real laughter interactions which  embraces the stage your your life is currently in.

My style does not focus on:
Super posed images
Props
Wraps
Studio lights
Posed hand placements
Photoshopped hair
Artificial backdrops

There are so many talented photographers to choose from, but it is important to research so you can understand your style and the aesthetic of photographs which will be delivered to you.

I love that my mom spend money on taking us to a studio when we were kids, but those aren’t the memories I hold close to my heart and you won’t see those photographs in my home now. Each person has their own style, and it is important that you understand their photographer’s aesthetic before you choose your photographer.

Both styled and lifestyle photographs are beautiful, but very different. You don’t have to like both.
Remember, no one would ask you to wear an outfit that doesn’t fit, and a photographer generally does not change their brand per client.

Having photographs of your family is a beautiful choice, it is just important to find an artist whose style already matches your vision.
